Musically, rock is focused on the use of electric guitar, usually accompanied, in a rock band, from the electric bass and drums.

Over the years the term rock has become a general  term for a wide variety of musical subgenres that have developed over the time. From the 60s onwards, rock music has indeed branched into a huge variety of subgenres: blended with blues to create rock to blues and southern rock, then with jazz and other forms of orchestral music created the fusion and progressive rock. At the same time, the rock music has also been influenced  from soul, funk and Latin music. In the years new genres appeared such as pop rock, hard rock, psychedelic rock, glam rock, heavy metal, and punk rock. The 80s saw the blossoming trend new wave, hardcore punk, electronic rock and alternative rock, while  the 90s have seen the spread of grunge, Britpop, indie rock and post-rock.

Rock music has also contributed to the spread of cultural and social movements, leading to the emergence of subcultures such as the mods and rockers in the UK and the hippie counterculture, which, from San Francisco, became widespread in the United States in the 60s. Similarly, the punk culture of the 70s then led to the birth of goth and emo subcultures. Continuing a part of the folk tradition of protest songs, one of the early manifestations of the rock was an expression of youth revolt against consumerism and conformism, then it tipped phenomenon since the early 80's with the spread of glam and pop rock. An example of rock bands are the Queen, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Led Zeppelin or the AC/DC, the Pink Floyd, the U2 etc., most of them coming from England.
